How to Replace Popcorn Ceilings is a post from: RaverX

Popcorn ceilings are also known as cottage cheese ceilings or even acoustic ceilings. This type of ceiling was popular in the 1950′s all the way into the 1980′s in many homes. It was often seen in bedrooms and hallways for its ability to reduce the noise. However, some New Jersey homes used it throughout. However, this type of ceiling has lost its appeal and actually dates a house. Most homeowners want to replace it once they purchase a new home.

Issues with Popcorn Ceilings

There are many practical reasons to remove the popcorn on your ceiling. For one thing, once it gets dirty it is almost impossible for you to clean. It also cannot be painted the same way you can paint the walls or a flat ceiling. If you want to paint it to make it look like new, you will have to hire a professional painter with spray-on equipment to repaint the ceiling. This is much more expensive than doing the painting yourself.

Another issue with this type of ceiling is that it dates your home, which can reduce the resale value. Because of the cost of recovering it with new paint, many homebuyers will not want to see this old-fashioned option in the home they purchase.

How to Remove the Ceiling Treatment

If you have purchased a home with this ceiling treatment or you are trying to get the best value for a home you are selling, you may want to remove the popcorn ceilings. In order to do this, you would need to scrape the treatment off of the ceiling. Because of the position and angle of this job, it will be a tedious, time-consuming task.

You will need to wet the ceiling with a water sprayer to soften the texture. Then you will need to use a trowel or putty knife to scrape the texture off of the ceiling. Because you are working on a ceiling, you may need frequent breaks to keep from getting too stiff and sore when you work on this project.

Before you can begin to remove the popcorn from your ceiling, you will need to have it inspected by a professional. Many manufacturers used asbestos in the paint formula to achieve the texture. Since it is considered a hazardous chemical, you would have to get it professionally removed. This might mean that you would be removed from your home or at least the area where the texture was being removed. Permits would be needed for the removal and disposal would have to be done properly for the job to be completed.

This would lengthen the time to getting your project completed and the cost involved. While asbestos was banned in 1978, any current products in circulation were exempt from the new law. This meant that some homes after 1978 could still have asbestos in the paint.

Another Option

If you are selling your home, you probably don’t want to put that much work into the project. If you just bought your house, you may not want to add to the cost. So, what do you do? A better solution that is affordable, and quick and easy is to use decorative tiles.

Decorative Ceiling Tiles is a company that offers beautiful and affordable tiles that allow you to quickly and easily update your home. Because textured ceilings are still popular in many homes, these tiles give you the look of texture while being easy to install and replace. They are also easier to clean than paint, allowing you to keep your New Jersey home looking its best. This is a project that you can either hire a professional or you can do it yourself without spending a lot of time on a DIY project. If you want to replace the tired, out-dated popcorn ceilings you are stuck with, consider beautiful ceiling tiles from Decorative Ceiling Tiles.
